Chapter 12

Sawyer strolled through the house he’d once been so proud of. If his heart grew any heavier he’d haul the damned thing around in his jeans.

Liza spent the afternoon with her Jack, leaving the kitchen empty and quiet. No Jerry, Kevin, Brad, Troy, Eric, or even Rudy. And worst of all, no Dillon.

He stepped into his beautifully arranged office. A random stack of papers on one corner of his desk wouldn’t stay there three minutes’ past Dillon seeing it. The management textbooks his bear purchased for his online studies could be relegated to a low bookshelf—surely Dillon wouldn’t have time for such once their cub was born.

The Bear Claw might need a new name as well; Dillon wouldn’t remain with the bar once he had parental responsibilities, would he? Their cub would need him home in the evenings. So would Sawyer.

Sawyer could manage all their financial needs—he made a damned good provider, with the means to keep his family comfortable.

Of course, Sawyer might have to make a few changes in his own life. Starting with the playroom. Oh, dear Moon! A swing! Riding crops! An entire porn shop of sex toys and lube ordered by the case, by wolves and foxes and pumas who had some strange ideas about what Sawyer actually liked.

Well, it had come in quite handy for political matters, but Rudy and Eric were settled now, and they could play on their own turf. Boo-Boo would just treat the whipping rack like an indoor tree, and climb.

Not suitable at all for their cub! Rudy and Eric could take these toys away to their own home: a toy chest in here should contain plushies and Legos and puzzles! He’d be a father soon, and he and Dillon would raise their son here, together.

Well, the space served as a grownup playroom long enough. He returned to his office for pencil and paper. Where to begin? A few favorite items under lock and key in his and Dillon’s bedroom. The rest?

Whatever Rudy and Eric didn’t take could be a gift to the foxes.

Once he cleared out the space, he’d cut an opening on the far wall, put in a door for easy access to his and Dillon’s bedroom.

He’d add a wall…here…dividing the space into a nursery and a playroom. Hmmm… For too long his workshop out back sat idle. An image appeared in his mind, a copy of something he’d seen long ago at his grandparents’ house.

“Liza was here” might as well have hung on a sign over the door, for his neglected tools sported no dust, and the walnut slabs he’d saved for a special occasion sat stacked by the door. Tongue stuck out from between his teeth, he sketched out the crib he’d build.

Then a changing table. A dresser.

Oh! A rocking bear! Like the one he’d loved when a cub himself.

Come Monday he’d need to rejoin the world, play human businessman again. But his weekend? He could either sit around drinking and moping over his absent lover, or…

He could make the next Ballantine a room to be proud of.
